Hugh D. Blomeke
February 9, 1949 - January 31, 2026
Hugh Douglas Blomeke, age 76, passed away on January 31, 2026. Born on February 9, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia, to John and Margaret Blomeke, Hugh was raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he attended Central High School. In 1967, while attending Auburn University, he met the love of his life, Kaye Swift, before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, graduating with the Class of 1972. Hugh and Kaye shared nearly 53 years of marriage built on faith, love, and devotion to family.
Hugh proudly served for 20 years in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, retiring with the rank of Commander. His distinguished naval career included service as Executive Officer aboard the USS Bowen and service during the First Gulf War as a member of the Seventh Fleet staff. He was respected for his leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to those under his command. Following his military retirement, Hugh dedicated 25 years to serving others as a financial services professional with First Command Financial Services, assisting military and civilian families throughout the Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., regions.
An American patriot and faithful follower of Christ, Hugh was known for his cheerful generosity, encouraging spirit, gentle humor, and genuine care for others. He consistently lifted those around him and loved deeply. He found his greatest joy in his family and is survived by his beloved wife, Kaye Swift Blomeke; his son, John Blomeke, and daughter-in-law, Bethanie Swendsen Blomeke; his treasured grandchildren, Clare, Aspen, and Liberty Blomeke; his sister, Linda Blomeke Hurst; and his brother-in-law, Don Hurst. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather beyond measure whose influence will continue to be felt for generations.
Hugh passed away following a UTV accident at the Grassland Mountain Preserve in Marshall, North Carolina, on the mountain behind his home. A visitation was held on February 19, 2026, at Mynatt Funeral Home in Fountain City, Knoxville, Tennessee, followed by a memorial service honoring his life and legacy. Full military honors and final farewell were rendered later that day at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville. Hugh will be remembered for his faithful service to his country, his steadfast faith in Christ, and the love and encouragement he shared with all who knew him.
